A Settler Curses the Mayor of Hebron During his Tour with the Dutch Consul in the Old City

A spiteful settlercursed the Mayor of Hebron, Dr. Daoud Zatari, during his tour with Mr. Peter Mollema ,the Dutch Consul and his accompanied delegation in areas adjacent to Al Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City. TheMayor didn’t respond to the insults and continued briefing the Consul about the occupation violations in the area.

Dr. Daoud Zatari considered attacking and cursing him by the settler as an expected behavior; since the settlers are following the policy of the Israeli Occupationwhich aims at the displacement of the inhabitants andof the expansion of settlements. Then, the Mayor and the visiting delegation listened to citizens’ daily suffering of the Occupation and of the illegal measures committed by the settlers.

Earlier, Dr. Daoud Zatari welcomed the Dutch Consul at Hebron Municipality. He spoke about the political situation of the city by putting lights on the daily occupation violations against the inhabitants who particularly dwell in the Old City, and on the obstructions imposed by the Occupation upon providing developments by municipality staff.

Thereafter, the Mayor referred to the under implementation projects in the city, and touched on the deep ties with many European cities, that aim at creating cooperation opportunities, sharing experiences at all levels, thus, enhancing the performance of work, increasing projects and so curbing unemployment rates in light of the Occupation challenges to obstruct the city development.

Dr. Zatari then raised the issue of the peace process and how the Palestinian leadership, chaired by President Abbas, is seeking a just and comprehensive peace and is trying to end occupation through negotiations and the peace process. However, the reality on the ground shows that Israel is not serious and lacks the real desire to achieve peace.

By the end of the meeting, The Mayor called the Consul to convey the reality of what is going on the ground and the citizens’ daily suffering of the Israeli Occupation.
On his part,Dr. Mollema didn't imagine the situation in the Old City to be as hard as it is on the ground. He expressed willingness to provide the need support to the city and its municipality at all level particularly after getting a first-hand view of thecitizens  suffering,  the closed stores, and the military barriers that obstruct the children while heading to schools.
